How a generator is made
Each generator is a set of word lists and construction rules written for that one category. Pages are written with AI assistance and then checked by automated tests and by reading real sample output before publication. A page is not published unless it passes our checks: enough distinct names, no broken rules, original guide text, featured names with meanings, frequently asked questions and links to related generators.
Originality
Word lists and prose are written for this site. We do not copy name lists from games, books or other generators, and we avoid trademarked character names. Prose on different pages is compared automatically so pages do not repeat each other.
Accuracy
Guides describe naming traditions in general terms (for example how clan names or virtue names are commonly used in tabletop settings). Rules and lore differ between editions, settings and tables; treat our guides as inspiration, and follow your own campaign's conventions.
Trademarks and independence
Dungeons & Dragons and D&D are trademarks of Wizards of the Coast LLC. scrollnames is independent and uses those terms only to describe the purpose of a generator.
Corrections
If a name, a guide or an answer is wrong, tell us. We fix confirmed mistakes promptly and remove names that are offensive.
Advertising
The site is free to use. We may show advertising in the future to cover costs; advertising will never decide which names are generated, and this page and the privacy policy will be updated before ads appear.
