What makes an orc name sound like an orc

Orc names are usually short and abrupt. They lean on hard consonants such as k, g, r, z and th, with one or two syllables and an ending that stops the word cold. Names that end on a consonant, such as Gorash or Brakmurk, sound like fists. Feminine names often end in an open vowel, as in Shaka, Mogzka or Naztha, which makes them sound sharper and less brutal without breaking the style.

Epithets and clan names carry the personality. Orc names in many settings work like soldier names: a short personal name plus a title earned in battle or a clan the character belongs to. A name like Gorash Skullsplitter tells you what he does, and Urgtuk of the Black Tusk tells you where he belongs.

Making orcs more than cannon fodder

Modern fantasy often treats orcs as a culture instead of a monster, and the best orc characters have motives, families and a code. Give an orc NPC a role beyond fighting, such as a shaman, a smith or a diplomat, and change the name to match. Shamans get titles about spirits and ash, warlords get titles about conquest, and a quiet scout might not have a title at all.

If you want an orc who breaks the mould, soften the name. A short name with a gentle ending, or a nickname given by friends, tells players that this orc is not what they expect before the first line of dialogue.

    Frequently asked questions

Are these orc names for D&D?

They work for D&D and any tabletop or fantasy setting that has orcs. scrollnames is independent and not affiliated with Wizards of the Coast.

What is the difference between Warrior, Shaman and Warlord?

Role changes the structure of the name. Warriors get a personal name with a clan or epithet. Shamans get a title linked to spirits and magic. Warlords get imposing titles linked to conquest and leadership.

    Do orcs have last names?

Most settings use a clan name or an epithet instead of a family surname. The generator uses both, such as of the Black Tusk or Skullsplitter.

Can I use these names in my game or story?

Yes. Check that a name does not clash with a trademark or an existing character if you plan to publish commercially.

How can I keep a list of names?

Press Save next to a name to keep it in your browser, or Copy all to paste every name into your notes. Share creates a link to the exact list.
